Iron Man’s Red and Gold Armor Debuts - Tales of Suspense #48

by @ 8:55 am. Filed under Iron Man - 1963, Mr. Doll

In this issue, Iron Man takes on a guy with one of the silliest names I’ve ever heard, Mr. Doll.  This adversary is basically an early machination of the Puppet Master in that he has a figurine made of a clay like substance and he can transform it into a likeness of anyone or anything and control that person.  Things kick off when Stark is turned down by a supplier so he goes to pay the guy a visit only to see him being terrorized by Mr. Doll.  Iron Man tries to take care of business but Mr. Doll deftly transforms his figurine into a likeness of Iron Man and starts putting the hurt on him.  Iron Man escapes, barely and he makes it back to office just in time to recharge.

Ironically, Mr. Doll’s next target is none other then Tony Stark but before the action kicks back in, Stark shows off his classic red and gold suit that would be the trademark of the comic hero for year’s to come.  Mr. Doll comes after Stark and after getting into one of his plants, he and Iron Man square off.  Mr. Doll appears to have the upper hand but Iron Man just acts like he’s going to do his adversaries bidding but he actually stops the pain by turning off his heart unit until he can build the device that will be Mr. Doll’s undoing.

In their final showdown, Iron Man uses his transistor powered force beam to reshape the clay like substance that’s Mr. Doll’s power into a likeness of Mr. Doll.  He gets him to drop the figurine and after that, it’s game over.
