This issue kicks off with a wind tunnel experiment going bad at one of Stark’s lab which requires Iron Man to save the day. Stark goes back to change and returs to check out the damage when his workers begin dropping through the earth and disappearing. After a couple of guards get pulled down, Stark himself gets dragged down to an unusual underground world called the Netherworld.
The leader of the Netherworld is the red hot Kala. The Netherworld is actually Atlantis with a huge bubble over it that fell to the bottom of the earth. Now Kala wants to wreck havoc on earth by staging an invastion. Similar to Iron Man’s debut, Stark agrees to help them build something that will reach the surface to stage their invasion. Instead, Stark builds a new Iron Man suit and takes on the Netherworld competition. Things end with Iron Man taking Kala to the surface where she ages immediately. Stricked with her new features, Iron Man takes her back down to the Netherworld where she becomes beautiful again. Kala then becomes infatuated with Iron Man but he’s not willing to spend his life near the core of the earth.
