When Angels Go Bad - Tales of Suspense #49

by @ 12:04 pm. Filed under Angel, Avengers, Iron Man - 1964, X-Men

In the issue that kicked off the second year of Iron Man, we have a somewhat silly premise but a lot of cameo’s.  Angel, one of the original X-Men, gets too close one of Tony Stark’s atomic test and essentially becomes evil.  There’s a funny set of frames where you can see Angel’s face pretty much hardens into a future criminal in a matter of seconds.  He goes back to X-Men mansion (the first of two comic crossovers), tells them he’s gone bad, and flies circles around his former teammates.  Professor X then sends out a distress call to the Avengers (the second cross over) but all of them, other then Tony Stark, are busy living the lives of their alternate identities.

Since Stark feels responsible for Angel going bad, he takes matters into own hands and after some high air tussling, the Angel gets the upper hand and turns some of Iron Man’s transistor magnets against him.  Iron Man then appears done when he taxes his transistors high up in the air and he begins to fall back down to earth.  Angel then regains his senses and saves Iron Man at the last minute, which was Stark’s plan all along.  Angel then apologizes to his X-Men brethen and all is well.
